In the late 19th century, a group of women painters began to attain prominence on the Finnish art scene. Attitudes toward them were slightly problematic, because gender was seen as a restrictive factor to their scale of artistic expression. Nonetheless, few people disputed the woman artists' significance. Helene Schjerfbeck gradually emerged as the most prominent of this group of painters. It is slightly ironic that although she despised the commercial aspects of art, her works nowadays fetch huge prices.
